Have you got a passion for theatre? Whether you’ve been performing for years or stepping onto the stage for the very first time, Hessle Theatre welcomes you. We hold open auditions for all our productions, want to know more?

Hessle Theatre Company is a community theatre company who has been staging top-quality productions in Hull and East Yorkshire since 1922. We take our craft seriously, but we are also serious about having fun. And we are proud to be a welcoming and friendly space for new faces and old.

We are not a school or academy; we don’t run classes or workshops, but the experience you’ll receive through our rehearsal period is invaluable. Our performers are brought together through an open audition process specially selected for the demands of each show.

What does “open audition” mean? Simply, it means that everyone is welcome, you do not have to be an existing member to audition for any of our shows.

How It Works

Hessle Theatre Company holds open auditions for every show we produce, and with 3 major productions every year, there’s plenty of opportunity to get involved. But how do you get involved?

Membership & Fees

All performers who join an HTC production become members of the company. Annual membership subscriptions are as follows:

There are no additional rehearsal fees. If you're a UK taxpayer, you can also support the company further through Gift Aid — just ask when you join.

What to Expect on the Day

We know that auditions can be nerve-racking, at HTC we do everything we can to make everyone feel welcome. So, to help calm those nerves, here’s what you can expect on the day.

Singing

Musicals, by their nature, involve a lot of singing. You will be asked to prepare a short piece that will be sent to you in advance. Practice is your best friend here. Don’t worry if you are not a trained singer; we’re looking for potential, commitment and energy, as much as hitting those notes.

Acting

If you are auditioning for a principal role, you will also be asked to present a short piece of dialogue (or script). Again, this will be sent to you in advance. When you practice, think about your character and how you want to present the piece. We aren’t looking for trained actors; we want someone who can demonstrate good stage presence and commitment to the role.

Movement/Dance

Depending on the production, we may need to see you show your dance or movement ability. We may teach you some choreography on the day, for you to perform. Our shows offer the opportunity for people of different dance abilities. We may ask people with additional capabilities to perform something more technical.

NOT A PERFORMER? WE STILL HAVE A PLACE FOR YOU

Theatre is not just about actors, singers and dancers. Performers would not have a stage to perform on without the valued team behind the scenes. HTC values the volunteers to make theatre happen.

Our productions rely on a massive team of volunteers; from backstage crew and set building to lighting and sound to costumes and front of house, there is so much to do!
